He doesn’t know he’s in water, until he’s not.
Have you ever seen a fish out of water? Suddenly, he realizes he’s missing what he didn’t even realize her had. He may not know what air is, but he knows it’s not water, and then he flops like crazy to get back to where he came from.
People can be the same way. Sometimes, something happens tossing us out of our comfort zone. Maybe we realized before this event how fortunate we were where we were and we didn’t want to leave our home waters in the first place. Sometimes we had no idea how fortunate we were but, after being tossed on the shore, we now long to go back to what we knew.
Other times we’ve been in the fishbowl looking out, wondering if there was a world beyond our glass reflection. Perhaps it was our own effort that picked us up and jumped out of the bowl and onto the shore.
However we got there, coming out of what we’ve known forever can be challenging and sometimes scary and usually a bit confusing.
And for a while, maybe we lay there like a fish, gasping for air and flopping around on a foreign shore.
But what we know that most fish don’t is that not many fish make it back to the water. When you’re tossed up on the shore, flopping and gasping is no game plan and doesn’t save many fish.
Fortunately, you’re no fish.
You don’t have to lay there gasping and flopping on the shore. You’re no fish. You can sit up, look around, discover the direction to new, cleaner, fresher water. You realize, maybe you can even find others like you. Maybe there is more to the world outside of your comfort zone if you just stop trying to get back in the bowl.
Eventually, you realize, you’re no fish. You can get up and walk, find the right path, and run in Joy to goals you couldn’t see when you were in the bowl, couldn’t flop your way to as you gasped on the shore.
However you got to where you are, it is a step in getting you to where you were meant to be, but you need to take that first step. You are no fish. Become who you were meant to be.
Be who you were created to be and you will set the world on fire.

When have you felt like a fish out of water? Pretend you are looking down on the situation from above. What do you see in yourself? What did you miss then that you see now?
